does anyone know how to fix problems the $Mft file on NTFS drives? one of my HDs has gone kaput and i really don't fancy trying to replace 1TB of music, films & tv :/

have tried chkdsk but it's useless, testdisk reports both the $Mft and its mirror are b0rked... and i'm at my wits' end

Might be a sill question (and knowing you you've already factored this in) but have you read this and this?

hadn't read them... flicked through them just now, interesting reading, but they don't appear to offer a solution to my woes, and, given that $mft and $mftmirr are apparently both corrupt, windows won't even recognise the drive :(

Just in dude:

It also has a link for using an Ubuntu disk (freely downloadable or I can post you a copy) to restore the HD to its former glory.
