got a letter advising me that i haven't applied for any maintenance* [fees paying, student grant etc.]

phoned my lea, who are sending me the requisite forms to fill out [probably with blood, in triplicate]... it's gonna be touch and go whether i can get this sorted before the uni throw me out for non-payment of fees

* patently rubbish, a: i requested them and b: why anyone would opt not to have their fees payed is beyond me

I agree - you should go and speak to the uni people now, so that they're aware of what's happening.
