i have a 500GB usb hard disc that went kaput [windows 2k crashed and b0rked the FAT table]

now, i'm trying to reformat it, but can't get it to format at anything other than 127GB on win2k and 810GB on xp.

neither of these are right, so i am reluctant to attempt it. how can i make it format properly?

stupid fucking windows

Windows is gay. Burn yourself a Knoppix live CD or something and format it yourself using Linux's fdisk and mkfs tools, or try this handy utility which I have never used before but which seems decent

weirdly enough, i just tried the fat32format. it tried to format it at 871GB!!!

dunno how to use the linux fdisk/mkfs thing, is it easy?

That's pretty weeeeird.

The Linux approach is probably a bit too finicky to explain here. Lots can go wrong if you're not familiar with it :)

Maybe try partition magic then?

Make sure you've got AVG or some antivirus installed. I never trust torrented executables.

Ahh, but how compatible is it with games? If it can't do games then it doesn't do Giggidy in my books. ;)

We're talking about formatting a drive, not installing a new OS :P

My location forces me into cybersocialising. Most of the folks I play online with are all London Slimers (or ex-Slimers)

XP needs SP2 in order to be able to see more than 125-130gb on a single drive. Make sure you have SP2 installed on the system you're using to format it. I just had the same headache with my 250gb hdd.

I've actually come to love XP (good grief, did I just say that?) as despite it falling over quite frequently it restarts (almost) back up every time. Turning it on and off again works a charm whereas other systems despite being more robust don't have the game support.

Oh yes! Win2k was an absolute lover! Hardly went wrong, did everything it needed to and well... except most modern games.

With my new PC I contemplated win2k instead of XP Pro(lapse), but then the drivers for my ubercard I heard were a bit shonky (which I thought were basically the same but allegedly not)

probably just a case of experimenter expectancy. don't listen to those nasty biased net nerds with their sponsorship from xp ;]
